Permits & Rules in Hamilton

Hamilton City Council
Reviewed on 27 July 2026
When do I need a permit?

Corridor access should be requested when a skip bin, container or similar non-excavation obstruction is placed within Hamilton City's public road corridor. Public placement is managed to protect pedestrians, traffic, neighbouring properties and council assets. Safe footpath access must remain available, with minimum unobstructed widths applying and a greater clearance required in the central city. Delivery vehicles and heavy items must not damage footpaths, berms or landscaped council areas, and bins cannot obstruct driveways, signs, manholes, stormwater grates or hydrants. Safety cones and barriers are required around the bin. A Traffic Management Plan may also be required where road or pedestrian movements are significantly affected. Private-property placement can avoid these approvals.
